Community Café

Can you help?
Every Wednesday, 1.00-4.00pm
Every Wednesday we’ll be opening our doors as a Warm Space & Community Cafe at St Laurence Church Hall in The Shambles! We’ll be open for all to enjoy, with an emphasis on providing support for anyone struggling financially during the Cost of Living Crisis. This is a space where people can feel warm and welcome, come for a cup of tea, play a board game, have a chat with a stranger, or be warm whilst they do a bit of work. We’ll have a community cafe running to provide cakes and, in due course, light lunches. These will be available free to those who need it and on a pay-as-you-feel basis for those who can afford it.

We’ve set up a crowd funder which will be match-funded by the Co-op Warm Spaces initiative, so for every £1 you donate we’ll get £2.

And we’re looking for some volunteers to help us run the spaces so if you have any time on Wednesday afternoons then we’d love to hear from you.

Who are we?
We are a community space in the heart of Stroud in the much loved ‘Shambles Hall’. We are working to help people who are struggling financially and emotionally in the Cost of Living Crisis by opening our doors.Community impact
Our Warm Space and Community Cafe will provide a relaxed, friendly and warm (in all senses of the word) place where members of the community can come to meet a  friend, get a hot drink, or simply to charge their phone. It will bring together a cross section of society from different age ranges and walks of life. Why are we crowdfunding?
We are crowd funding to provide support for people that are impacted by the cost of living crisis, with the funding we will be able to expand the offering to include lunches, and a digital hub, where people who need to use a computer, or need support using a computer can come and get help.
Co-op are kindly match funding any donations we receive up to £5,000 so your donation will go even further.

How we’ll spend the money raised
We will spend the money on much needed kitchen equipment, digital equipment for the digital hub, hot drinks, ingredients for lunches, heating and electricity bills.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help with
the following tasks
Baking Cakes
If you enjoy baking and would be happy to bake one or two cakes or tray bakes for either weekly or spordically then please get in touch. We have budget to buy ingredients, we’ll just need to know what’s in each cake so we can let the public know. You’d be very welcome to come to the hall to bake on Wednesday mornings. Being a warm and welcoming presence
We need some people who enjoy creating a welcoming environment by chatting to people, making sure there is enough hot water for hot drinks, serving cake and soup, doing a bit of washing up and maybe playing the odd card game!Set up and take down
If you have half an hour at 12.30 or 4pm to help put some tables and chairs, toys and generally make the place welcoming, and clear up again afterwards, then we’d love to hear from you.

Anything else
Musicians, crafters, story tellers and song-singers.
If you’re available to come and provide some light entertainment one afternoon we’d especially love to hear from you.

Of course teas, coffees, cake and soups are available for volunteers throughout the afternoon.

Communion during this time

In these unprecedented times, we are working hard to find imaginative solutions in a landscape that has been rapidly changing. Sometimes we get things right, and sometimes we miss the mark. I apologise that this has been the case regarding communion.

For those of you who have received wafers in a parcel, we would ask that you either consume them, or put them somewhere safe to bring back once we are able to be together again.

We are going to be sending out a new order of service for use during this time as either a simple service of the word or, on occasion, to help us to share an Agape meal together.
